Dale Chihuly

Dale Chihuly is a glass artist, meaning he makes sculptures out of glass. Glassblowing is a fine art that takes years to learn and over a lifetime to master. The initial internship of a glass blower lasts about 6 years, after studio and sculpture classes.
The art of glassblowing was dying in the early 1900's due to the costs of training glass blowers and the ease of producing it in factories via presses. The arts still survives today however because of artists and people who take pride in their work. Glassware that is hand blown and handcrafted goes for a high price in today's market and sculptures by famous artists go for even more.
Dale Chihuly is the most famous of modern glass artists, he is 70 years old and he wears an eyepatch. His eye was severely cut by glass in the 70's in a car accident out of all things. His works are extremely large and are often center pieces in lobbies and large rooms with high ceilings and such.
He is known by the organic forms that he blows his glass into as well as the vibranta colors that he incorporates into his art.
